Potentiaalikenttiä, often translated as potential fields, are fundamental concepts in physics and mathematics used to describe forces and their effects. A potential field is a scalar function defined over a region of space, where the value of the function at any point represents the potential energy per unit "test" quantity at that point. Forces are then derived from this potential field by taking its negative gradient. This means that the force at any point is directed in the direction of the steepest decrease in potential.

The concept of potential fields is widely applicable across various branches of physics. In classical mechanics, gravitational potential fields describe the gravitational force exerted by massive objects. Electric potential fields are central to electromagnetism, explaining electrostatic forces and the behavior of charged particles. Magnetic potential fields are also utilized, though often expressed in terms of vector potentials due to the nature of magnetic fields.

Mathematically, a potential field $V(\mathbf{r})$ is a scalar function of position $\mathbf{r}$. The force $\mathbf{F}$ associated with this field is given by $\mathbf{F} = -\nabla V$, where $\nabla$ is the gradient operator. This relationship simplifies many problems by allowing calculations to be performed on a scalar function rather than a vector function. The work done by a conservative force in moving an object between two points is independent of the path taken and is equal to the difference in potential energy between those points. This conservativeness is a key characteristic of forces that can be derived from a potential field.
