Potash Lagerstätten is a term used in geology and paleontology to describe fossil-rich sedimentary deposits that form in evaporite settings characterized by high potash mineral content, particularly sylvite and carnallite. The concept denotes beds where exceptional preservation of organisms occurs within or alongside evaporite minerals, reflecting a combination of rapid burial and specific chemical conditions.

These deposits develop in restricted basins within arid or semi-arid regions during periods of intense evaporation, when evaporite suites such as halite and related potassium salts accumulate and can encapsulate organic remains. The same chemical environment that concentrates potassium salts can promote exceptional preservation through rapid burial in fine-grained sediments, anoxia, and early diagenetic mineralization, sometimes resulting in well-preserved microfossils, delicate invertebrates, or other organisms adapted to hypersaline conditions.

Fossil preservation in potash-bearing deposits may differ from typical marine or lacustrine Lagerstätten, with biases toward organisms tolerant of high salinity and evaporitic diagenesis. Preservation modes can include permineralization or episodic replacement by evaporite minerals, as well as fine impressions within salt-rich matrices. However, the term is not universally adopted, and there is no single, standardized set of criteria for what constitutes a Potash Lagerstätte.

Geographically and temporally, potential occurrences are associated with ancient evaporite basins worldwide; discussions of the concept emphasize its usefulness for interpreting life in high-salinity environments. Research faces challenges such as diagenetic alteration, dissolution or replacement of potash minerals, and dating difficulties, all of which complicate fossil recovery and correlation.
