Posttranskriptionella, or posttranscriptional, refers to processes and regulatory events that act on an RNA transcript after it has been synthesized from DNA. In eukaryotes, these steps determine the fate of the transcript, including its processing, export from the nucleus, localization within the cell, stability, translation into protein, or degradation.

Key processing steps include 5' capping, splicing to remove introns, and 3' polyadenylation. Splicing can produce multiple mRNA isoforms through alternative splicing. RNA editing and modification can alter bases, influencing coding potential or binding of proteins.

RNA stability and surveillance: Deadenylation and decapping lead to exonucleolytic decay; nonsense-mediated decay removes transcripts with premature stop codons. The stability of mRNA is also controlled by RNA-binding proteins and microRNAs that bind to elements in the 5' and 3' UTRs, modulating degradation or translation.

Localization and translation regulation: mRNAs are transported to specific cellular compartments, where localization signals in untranslated regions direct movement. Translation can be repressed or activated depending on cellular state; microRNAs and RNA-binding proteins enable rapid changes in protein synthesis.

Significance: Posttranscriptional control is essential for development, differentiation, and response to stimuli. Dysregulation can contribute to diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders, and the study of posttranscriptional mechanisms informs understanding of gene expression and cellular regulation.
