Postmodernism refers to a broad philosophical and cultural movement that emerged in the mid-to-late 20th century, largely as a reaction against or a departure from modernist principles. It is characterized by skepticism towards grand narratives, objective truth, and universal reason. Instead, postmodern thought often emphasizes relativism, subjectivity, and the fragmentation of experience.

It suggests that meaning is socially constructed and context-dependent, often through language and power structures. In art, literature, and architecture, postmodernism is recognized for its playfulness, self-referentiality, and rejection of stylistic purity. It often incorporates elements from popular culture and challenges conventional notions of originality. The movement's influence is widespread, impacting fields such as philosophy, sociology, literary theory, and cultural studies, though its precise definition and scope remain subjects of ongoing debate and interpretation.
