Posthumousness refers to events, recognitions, or phenomena that arise after a person has died. In culture and scholarship, the term commonly describes works published, released, or attributed to someone posthumously, as well as the enduring memory or reputation that develops after death.

Etymology: From the Latin posthumus, meaning “after burial” or “born after death,” the term entered English to denote situations occurring subsequent to a death.

Contexts and examples: In literature, posthumous publication occurs when manuscripts are released after the author's death. Franz Kafka's novels were published posthumously by Max Brod. In music and cinema, unreleased works, film projects, or albums may appear after the creator's death, contributing to posthumous fame or to memorialization; Vincent van Gogh's enduring reputation and influence is often described as posthumous, and Tupac Shakur's posthumous albums kept his presence in public life after death.

Legal and ethical considerations: Intellectual property rights and moral rights often extend beyond death, with heirs or estates controlling distribution, permissions, and credits. Posthumous releases may invite questions about authenticity, authorship, and editorial integrity when others finish or alter a creator's work.
