Posterioriin

Posterioriin is a fictional term used in theoretical discussions of developmental biology to illustrate how posterior identity could be established by a molecular gradient. In the imagined model, posterioriin is a small secreted protein or peptide produced at a posterior source; it diffuses through embryonic tissue and degrades over distance, creating a concentration gradient that cells can read to determine their position.

Cells detect posterioriin through a receptor that triggers a transcriptional program promoting posterior fate and suppressing anterior programs.
