Positiefeedback refers to the system by which an organism receives information about the position and movement of its body parts. This sensory input is crucial for motor control, enabling us to interact with our environment effectively. The primary sensory modality involved in position feedback is proprioception, often considered the sixth sense. Proprioceptors are specialized nerve endings located in muscles, tendons, and joints that continuously send signals to the central nervous system.

These signals inform the brain about the degree of muscle stretch, the tension in tendons, and the angle of joints. This information is processed unconsciously, allowing for smooth and coordinated movements without requiring conscious thought for every action. For example, when reaching for an object, position feedback allows us to adjust the trajectory of our arm and hand in real-time, even if our vision is obscured.

Disruptions in position feedback can lead to various motor deficits. Conditions affecting the nervous system, such as stroke or peripheral neuropathy, can impair proprioception, resulting in clumsiness, unsteadiness, and difficulty with fine motor skills. Rehabilitation therapies often focus on retraining the sensory-motor system to improve position feedback and restore functional movement.
