Portlandzki

Portlandzki is a Polish adjective derived from the place name Portland. It denotes relation or origin from Portland, most commonly Portland, Oregon, but it can also refer to Portland, Maine, or to items named after the city. The form inflects for gender and number: portlandzki (masc.), portlandzka (fem.), portlandzkie (neut./plur.).

In construction and geology, the term appears in several fixed phrases. Cement portlandzki, or Portland cement, is a widely used hydraulic cement that gained its name because its color and texture resemble Portland stone. It emerged in the early 19th century and became a standard for modern concrete. Portland cement is a key material in building and infrastructure projects worldwide.

Portland stone, a famous oolitic limestone from the Isle of Portland in Dorset, is used as a building material in Britain and beyond. In Polish this is often called skała portlandzka or kamień portlandzki. The adjective portlandzki is also used in toponymy and everyday language to describe institutions or products associated with the city, for example portlandzkie władze (the authorities of Portland).
