Porausputket

Porausputket are long, hollow steel tubes that form a central part of the drill string in drilling operations. They transmit torque from surface equipment to downhole tools and serve as a conduit for drilling fluid to reach the drill bit and return cuttings to the surface. They are used in oil and gas wells, geothermal installations, mineral exploration, and water-well drilling.

Construction and design: Most porausputket are made from carbon or alloy steel and can be seamless or welded tubes. They have threaded tool joints at their ends to enable reliable connections between successive pipes. Correct straightness, dimensional accuracy, and thread integrity are essential to maintain borehole quality and prevent downhole problems. Surfaces may be treated or coated to improve wear and corrosion resistance.

Variations and materials: Standard drill pipes are designed for strong torsional and fatigue performance. In corrosive or high-temperature environments, stainless or specialized alloy steels may be used. Some variants include wear-resistant liners or protective coatings. Pipe lengths per joint vary, and multiple joints are assembled on site to reach the desired depth.

Manufacturing and standards: Drilling pipes are produced to international standards, commonly API specifications, with additional ISO guidance in some regions. Quality control includes non-destructive testing, dimensional checks, and hydrostatic testing to verify strength and integrity.

Maintenance and handling: Regular inspections for corrosion, pitting, thread damage, wear, and bending are required. Damaged or deformed pipes are withdrawn from use. Proper storage and careful handling are necessary to protect thread connections and extend service life.
