Pooltehiskiud

Pooltehiskiud, also known as semi-synthetic fibers, are textile materials that are derived from natural sources but undergo a significant chemical processing to create the final fiber. They bridge the gap between natural fibers, such as cotton and wool, and fully synthetic fibers, like polyester and nylon. The primary natural source for most semi-synthetic fibers is cellulose, which is typically obtained from wood pulp or cotton linters.

The production process involves dissolving the cellulose in a chemical solvent and then regenerating it into a fibrous form. Common examples of semi-synthetic fibers include rayon (also known as viscose), modal, and lyocell. Rayon was one of the first widely produced semi-synthetic fibers, offering a soft feel and good absorbency, often resembling silk or cotton. Modal is a type of rayon known for its enhanced softness and durability, even when wet. Lyocell, produced using a more environmentally friendly closed-loop solvent system, is celebrated for its strength, smoothness, and biodegradability.

Semi-synthetic fibers possess a range of desirable properties. They are generally breathable and comfortable to wear, making them suitable for clothing. Their ability to absorb moisture is comparable to natural fibers, which can be advantageous in certain applications. Furthermore, they can be dyed easily, allowing for a wide variety of colors. However, their properties can vary depending on the specific type and manufacturing process, and some may be less durable than fully synthetic alternatives. They are widely used in apparel, home furnishings, and industrial textiles.
