Polyoltyps is a term that may refer to the various types of polyols, a broad class of chemical compounds that contain multiple hydroxyl (OH) groups. Polyols are characterized by their functionality, meaning the number of reactive hydroxyl groups per molecule, and by their carbon backbone. They play a central role in polyurethane chemistry and appear in many natural and synthetic substances.

Classification of polyols commonly distinguishes by hydroxyl functionality and by the type of carbon skeleton. Functionalities range from diols (two OH groups) to triols, tetraols, and higher; higher functionality generally increases cross-linking in polymers. Carbon backbones can be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, or aromatic. Broad categories include natural polyols, such as glycerol and sugar alcohols (alditols) like sorbitol and xylitol, and synthetic polyols, produced from petrochemical or bio-based feedstocks.

The main industrial classes are polyether polyols, polyester polyols, and polycarbonate polyols. Polyether polyols are typically produced by adding propylene oxide or ethylene oxide to starter alcohols, yielding flexible to rigid foams and elastomers. Polyester polyols result from the condensation of diacids or anhydrides with diols and are valued for strength and chemical resistance. Polycarbonate polyols, often made from phosgene or alternative routes, offer durability and flame resistance. Other specialized polyols include hydroxy-terminated polybutadienes and acrylated or urethane-modified derivatives.

Key properties used to specify polyol types include hydroxyl number, functionality, molecular weight, and the distribution of chain lengths. These determine reactivity with isocyanates, polymer architecture, and final material properties in applications such as polyurethane foams, coatings, adhesives, and elastomers. Production and selection of polyol types aim to balance performance, processing, and cost for a given end use.
