Polymerointityypin refers to the classification of polymerization reactions based on their fundamental mechanisms. These types are crucial for understanding how monomers link together to form polymers. The two primary categories are chain-growth polymerization and step-growth polymerization.

Chain-growth polymerization involves the rapid addition of monomers to an active site, such as a radical, cation, or anion. This process typically proceeds through distinct stages: initiation, propagation, and termination. Initiation creates the active site, which then adds monomers one by one in the propagation step. Termination deactivates the active site, ending the polymer chain growth. Examples include free radical polymerization, cationic polymerization, and anionic polymerization. This method often results in polymers with a high molecular weight achieved quickly.

Step-growth polymerization, on the other hand, involves the reaction between functional groups of monomers, oligomers, or polymers. The molecular weight of the polymer increases gradually as these functional groups react. This process doesn't require an active site and can occur at any stage of the reaction, even with very small molecules. Monomers usually have at least two functional groups, and the reaction often releases a small molecule byproduct, like water. Common examples include condensation polymerization, such as polyester and polyamide formation. The key characteristic is that polymer formation occurs through sequential reactions between any two molecules containing reactive end groups.
