Polymerende

Polymerende is a term used in polymer science to describe processes and phenomena associated with the ends of polymer chains during polymerization and after polymerization. In Dutch-language literature, polymerende is often used as a gerund indicating the action of polymerizing or the state of having active chain ends.

Definition and scope: The term does not designate a single reaction. It encompasses end-group phenomena, including functionalization of chain ends, coupling between chains, and the formation of telechelic polymers where reactive groups occupy the termini. It is a broad concept used to discuss how end groups influence molecular weight control, architecture, and later reactivity.

Mechanisms: Common themes involve end-group functionalization in living or controlled polymerization systems, condensation or click-type reactions at chain ends, and crosslinking initiated by functional groups located at polymer termini. The aim is to tailor properties and enable subsequent modifications by manipulating end groups.

Applications: Telechelic polymers—polymers with reactive end groups—are a typical product of polymerende chemistry, enabling linking into networks, adhesion, coatings, and bioconjugation. End-capped polymers improve compatibility in blends and allow post-polymerization modifications. In hydrogels and elastomeric materials, end-group interactions can influence network formation and mechanical performance.

Terminology: Polymerende as a concept has variable usage and is not a universally formal category across all polymer disciplines. It remains a descriptive term in discussions of end-group chemistry and chain-end control within broader polymerization theory.
