Polymeerstart

Polymeerstart is a term used in polymer science and materials research to describe a conceptual initiation mechanism for polymerization in which a dedicated 'start' unit or initiator is covalently bound to a substrate or incorporated into a monomer system to trigger chain growth at a defined point in time or space. The term is not universally standardized and may appear in theoretical discussions, experimental reports, or in multidisciplinary work dealing with controlled polymerization.

Mechanism: A polymeerstart unit remains dormant until activated by an external stimulus such as light, heat, a redox couple, or a chemical signal. Activation generates reactive species—radicals, cations, or anionic centers—that initiate polymerization of adjacent monomers. In surface-initiated variants, the start unit anchors to a substrate and seeds localized polymer growth, enabling grafted brushes or patterned coatings.

Implementation: Start units can be covalently attached to surfaces, embedded within polymerizable networks, or bound to nanoparticles.
