Polymeeriluokkia, often translated as polymer classes or polymer categories, refers to a system of classifying polymers based on their structure, origin, or properties. This classification helps in understanding and predicting the behavior and applications of different polymeric materials.

One common classification is based on the polymer's backbone structure. This includes linear polymers, where monomers are linked in a single chain, branched polymers, which have side chains attached to the main chain, and cross-linked polymers, where polymer chains are interconnected by covalent bonds, forming a three-dimensional network. Another important classification is based on the monomer composition. This distinguishes between homopolymers, made from a single type of monomer, and copolymers, formed from two or more different types of monomers. Copolymers can be further categorized into random, alternating, block, and graft copolymers, depending on how the different monomer units are arranged along the chain.

Polymers can also be classified by their origin, broadly into natural polymers, such as cellulose, proteins, and natural rubber, and synthetic polymers, which are manufactured by humans, like polyethylene, PVC, and nylon. Furthermore, classification by properties is frequently used in practical applications. This includes categorizing polymers as thermoplastics, which can be repeatedly softened by heating and hardened by cooling, thermosets, which undergo irreversible chemical changes upon heating, forming a rigid, infusible network, and elastomers, which exhibit rubber-like elasticity and can be stretched significantly and return to their original shape. This understanding of polymer classes is fundamental to materials science and engineering, guiding material selection for diverse technological uses.
