Polygynypolyandry

Polygynypolyandry, also known as group marriage or polygamous marriage, refers to a form of marriage in which an individual has more than one spouse simultaneously. Specifically, it encompasses two distinct practices: polygyny, where one man is married to multiple women, and polyandry, where one woman is married to multiple men. These practices can occur independently or in conjunction with each other within a society.

Polygyny has been historically more prevalent than polyandry across different cultures and time periods. It is often associated with patriarchal societies where men hold a higher social and economic status. Reasons for its practice can include economic advantages, the desire for a larger family, or social prestige. Polyandry, on the other hand, is rarer and has been observed in specific cultural contexts, often linked to situations where land is scarce or there is a need to keep property within a family lineage, such as in some parts of Tibet.
