Polyeen
Polyeen is the Dutch term for polyenes, a broad class of organic compounds characterized by multiple carbon–carbon double bonds. In typical polyenes, double bonds are arranged in a conjugated sequence along a carbon chain, creating delocalized pi electrons that affect the molecule’s color and reactivity. Simple examples include butadiene and hexatriene, which illustrate increasing numbers of double bonds.
Natural polyenes occur widely in biology. Carotenoids such as lycopene and beta-carotene are long, conjugated polyenes
In synthesis, polyenes can be produced by polymerization of dienes or by stepwise construction of longer conjugated
Applications of polyenes span medicine, pigments, and materials. Polyene antibiotics are valuable antifungal agents but can
