Polychotomous

Polychotomous is an adjective used to describe a classification or division that results in more than two branches or categories. In contrast to dichotomous, which implies a division into exactly two parts, polychotomous indicates a split into three or more distinct groups.

The term finds application in various fields, including biology, computer science, and statistics. In biology, for example, a polychotomous key is used for identifying organisms. Unlike a dichotomous key that presents a series of binary choices, a polychotomous key offers multiple options at each step, allowing for a faster or more efficient classification if designed well.

In computer science, polychotomous data might arise when a variable can take on several discrete values. This can influence the design of algorithms and data structures, particularly in areas like decision trees or classification models where a feature can have multiple possible outcomes. Similarly, in statistics, a polychotomous variable is a categorical variable with more than two levels.
