Poliklinists

The term is most commonly used in languages of Eastern Europe and former Soviet states, where polyclinics historically served as the central hub of primary and preventive care. In English, the term is infrequent and the professional is more commonly described as a general practitioner or family physician working in a polyclinic.

Definition and scope: Poliklinists typically provide first-contact care, perform routine examinations, manage chronic diseases, order laboratory tests and imaging, administer vaccines, screen for risk factors, and coordinate referrals to hospitals or specialists. They work as part of multidisciplinary teams alongside pediatricians, obstetricians and gynecologists, dentists, nurses, and other staff within the polyclinic.

Education and training: A poliklinist is generally a physician with a medical degree and postgraduate training in general practice, family medicine, or a specialty aligned with outpatient care. Training emphasizes preventive medicine, patient-centered communication, and care coordination. Continuing medical education is common to maintain licensure.

Historical and regional context: The polyclinic model originated in the 19th and 20th centuries and became a hallmark of Soviet and post-Soviet health systems, where residents could access a broad range of outpatient services under one roof.
