Polarities

Polarity refers to the existence of two opposite or contrasting properties in a system. The term is used across disciplines to describe dual or directional characteristics, from physical orientation to abstract relations.

In physics and engineering, electrical polarity designates which terminal is positive or negative and governs current direction. Magnetic polarity indicates the orientation of a magnet’s north and south poles, a key factor in magnetic fields and device operation.

In chemistry, molecular polarity arises when electrons are unevenly shared, creating a dipole moment that affects solubility, reactivity, and interactions with light. Polar solvents dissolve polar compounds more readily than nonpolar ones. In biology, cell polarity refers to spatial organization that underlies directional processes such as transport and development.

In language and logic, polarity items are words whose availability depends on negation or other contexts. In mathematics and geometry, polarity describes a dual relation between objects, such as a point and a line with respect to a conic, or dualities in convex and projective spaces.

In social and political contexts, polarity describes divisions between opposing camps or opinions, often connected with polarization and conflict, but also reflecting diverse viewpoints that drive debate.
