Polümeervahtudel, commonly translated as polymer foams, are materials produced by introducing a gas phase into a polymer matrix. This process results in a lightweight material with a cellular structure, consisting of a large volume of gas trapped within a solid polymer. The properties of polymer foams can be widely varied depending on the type of polymer used, the foaming agent, and the manufacturing process.

These foams can be broadly categorized into two main types: closed-cell and open-cell. In closed-cell foams, the gas is contained within discrete, sealed pockets, leading to good thermal and acoustic insulation properties, as well as buoyancy. Open-cell foams, on the other hand, have interconnected cells, making them more flexible, breathable, and absorbent.

The production of polymer foams typically involves either physical or chemical foaming methods. Physical foaming uses inert gases or volatile liquids that vaporize under heat or pressure changes to create the cell structure. Chemical foaming relies on the decomposition of chemical blowing agents, which release gas when heated.

Polymer foams find extensive applications across various industries due to their unique properties. They are used as insulation in construction and appliances, for packaging to protect goods, in automotive components for weight reduction and impact absorption, and in furniture and bedding for comfort. Their versatility and customizable characteristics make them indispensable in modern material science and engineering.
