Pokuttia

Pokuttia is a historical and geographical region located in western Ukraine, primarily encompassing the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. It is situated in the Carpathian Mountains and is known for its picturesque landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and distinct traditions. The name "Pokuttia" is believed to derive from the Slavic word "kut," meaning "corner" or "nook," referring to its geographical position in a secluded mountain area.

The region has a long and complex history, having been under the rule of various powers throughout the centuries, including the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Austria-Hungary, and briefly, Romania. These historical influences have shaped its unique cultural identity, which is a blend of Ukrainian, Polish, and Hutsul elements. Pokuttia is particularly renowned for its Hutsul culture, characterized by vibrant folk art, distinctive music, traditional clothing, and unique architectural styles.

The economy of Pokuttia has traditionally been based on agriculture, forestry, and pastoralism.
