PohjoisKarjala

Pohjois-Karjala (North Karelia) is one of Finland's 19 regions. It lies in eastern Finland along the border with Russia, with Joensuu as its regional capital and largest city. The region has a population of roughly 165,000 people.

Geography and nature are major features, with boreal forests and numerous lakes shaping the landscape. Lake Pielinen is a prominent lake in the area, and the region includes protected areas such as Koli National Park, known for its scenic views and outdoor recreation opportunities. The natural environment supports outdoor activities year-round, including hiking, boating, and skiing.

Joensuu hosts a campus of the University of Eastern Finland (UEF), reflecting the region's emphasis on education and research. The presence of universities and research institutions supports local innovation and workforce development.

Culture and landmarks contribute to the region's identity. Ilosaarirock, an annual music festival in Joensuu, is among the notable events. The region preserves Karelia heritage in local cuisine, crafts, and cultural traditions, visible in museums, museums, and community activities throughout Pohjois-Karjala.
