Pohjana

Pohjana is a Finnish term meaning “as a basis” or “on the basis of,” used to indicate the foundation or grounds for a claim, decision, or analysis. It derives from pohja, meaning base or foundation, with the suffix -na, and functions as an adverbial or predicative element in sentences.

In typical use, pohjana introduces what is being used as the basis, often preceding a clause or phrase that names a source or justification. Examples include: “Päätöksen pohjana on ollut taloustutkimus” (The decision is based on an economic study) and “Tämän tutkimuksen pohjana ovat aiemmin julkaistu data” (The basis of this study is previously published data). The form is common in formal, academic, policy, and legal Finnish language.

The corresponding adjectival form is pohjana oleva, meaning “the basis on which,” and can modify nouns, e.g., “pohjana oleva tutkimus” (the study on which [this is based]). The noun form pohja remains the semantic core of the expression.

As a capitalized proper noun, Pohjana is not widely established as a place or organization in major reference works; if encountered with capitalization it may represent a surname or a rare toponym, but it is not a standard entry in major indexes.
