Pogradec

Pogradec is a town and municipality in southeastern Albania. It is the administrative center of the Pogradec Municipality within Korçë County, and it sits on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid, near the border with North Macedonia.

Geography and environment: The town lies along the lake’s shore, with hills rising inland. The Drino valley and the nearby Drilon area, with spring-fed waters and a landscaped park, are notable attractions nearby. The local climate is mild and moderated by the lake, with warm summers and cool winters.

History: The region has a long history of settlement dating back to antiquity. In the modern era, Pogradec developed as a regional market town on Lake Ohrid and became part of Albania’s Korçë region. After Albania’s 2015 local government reform, it functions within the larger municipality of Pogradec in Korçë County.

Economy and culture: The local economy relies on tourism, fishing, and agriculture. The lakeside promenade along the shoreline is a center of daily life, and the Drilon area draws visitors for its scenery and springs. The town hosts cultural events that reflect southeastern Albanian traditions and cuisine.

Demographics and transport: The population is predominantly Albanian. Pogradec is connected by regional roads to Korçë and other towns; it has no rail service. The nearest international airport is in Tirana.
