Poetovio

Poetovio was a Roman city located in the province of Pannonia Superior. Today, its remains are found near the modern Slovenian town of Ptuj. It was established as a military camp for the Legio XIII Gemina, likely around the time of Emperor Augustus. Poetovio grew into a significant administrative and economic center within the province, serving as a crucial hub for trade and military operations in the region.

The city occupied a strategic position along the Drava River, facilitating transport and commerce. Its importance is further evidenced by the presence of a mint, which produced coins during the 3rd century AD. Poetovio also held the status of a municipium, a Roman town with a degree of self-governance. The archaeological site has yielded numerous artifacts and structures, including remnants of fortifications, public buildings, baths, and housing, offering valuable insights into Roman urban life in Pannonia. The city's history is intertwined with the broader military and administrative developments of the Roman Empire in its northern frontier.
