Podstata
Podstata is a noun in Czech and Slovak meaning essence, substance, or core. It denotes the fundamental nature or defining characteristics of a thing, beyond its superficial aspects. In philosophy, podstata is used to discuss essential properties—the traits without which a thing would not be what it is—and is often contrasted with the set of accidental properties. In ordinary speech, podstata is used to indicate the main point or central aspect of a matter, as in podstata problému (the essence of the problem). The related adjective podstatný means essential or substantial, and the phrase "podstata věcí" appears in both everyday and scholarly discourse. Etymologically, the word is formed from the prefix pod- and a root linked to state or standing, reflecting the notion of standing beneath the surface as the underlying reality.
