Podpropulsion systems, often referred to as podded propulsors or azimuth thrusters, are a type of marine propulsion system where the propeller and its associated engine or motor are housed together in a pod that can rotate 360 degrees. This allows for full directional control without the need for traditional rudders or steering gears.

The primary advantage of podpropulsion systems is their enhanced maneuverability. By being able to direct thrust in any direction, vessels equipped with pods can achieve greater agility, making them ideal for operations requiring precise station-keeping, such as dynamic positioning, ferry operations, and offshore support. This also contributes to improved fuel efficiency as the vessel's direction can be optimized more effectively than with conventional propeller and rudder setups.

These systems can be powered by diesel engines, electric motors, or hybrid systems. Electric motors are increasingly common, with power often supplied from onboard generators or batteries. The pod can be fixed to the hull or retractable, depending on the vessel's design and operational requirements. Retractable pods offer the advantage of reducing drag when the propulsion is not needed or when the vessel is in shallow waters.

Podpropulsion systems are utilized across a wide range of vessels, including cruise ships, icebreakers, ferries, offshore construction vessels, and tugboats. Their adoption has grown significantly due to their efficiency, maneuverability, and potential for space-saving within the vessel's hull. However, they can be more complex and costly to maintain than traditional propulsion systems.
