Podexponovaný is a Czech term that translates to underexposed in English. In the context of photography and cinematography, it refers to an image that has received less light than is considered optimal for proper exposure. This results in a darker image than intended, with details in the shadow areas being obscured or lost.

Underexposure can occur due to various factors, including insufficient ambient light, a fast shutter speed, a narrow aperture (large f-number), or an incorrect camera setting for the available light conditions. The consequences of underexposure include a lack of detail in dark regions, increased digital noise when attempting to brighten the image in post-processing, and a generally muted or flat appearance. While sometimes intentional for artistic effect, it is typically considered an error in exposure. Modern digital cameras and editing software offer ways to mitigate the effects of mild underexposure, but severe cases can be difficult or impossible to fully correct without significant loss of quality.
