PoEtoidega

PoEtoidega is a term used in Estonian IT discourse to describe devices and systems that receive electrical power over Ethernet via Power over Ethernet (PoE). Practically, PoE allows data and power to be transmitted over a single Ethernet cable, simplifying installation and reducing the need for local electrical outlets.

PoE is defined by IEEE standards. The original 802.3af standard (PoE) published in 2003 provides up to 15.4 watts per port, with about 12.95 watts reliably available at the powered device after cable losses. The 802.3at amendment (PoE+) increases practical power to around 25.5 watts per port. The 802.3bt standard (Type 3 and Type 4, finalized in 2018–2020) raises this to 60 watts and 90 watts per port, enabling higher-power devices.

A PoE system comprises power sourcing equipment (PSE) such as PoE switches or midspan injectors, and powered devices (PDs) such as IP cameras, VoIP phones, wireless access points, or sensors. Cabling typically uses Cat5e or Cat6 and is limited by about 100 meters between PSE and PD. Power negotiation between PSE and PD ensures safe delivery and efficient usage.

Benefits include centralized power management, simplified cabling, and reduced electrical work. Limitations involve power budget constraints, thermal considerations, and compatibility with non-PoE equipment. PoEtoidega is common in modern networks, especially for security devices, communications gear, and building automation.
