Pneumatic conveying systems, often referred to as pneumatikförderer in German, are mechanical handling devices that move bulk materials through a pipeline using a fluid, typically air. These systems are widely employed in various industries for transporting granular, powdered, or other loose materials. The fundamental principle involves creating a pressure differential that propels the material from one point to another.

There are two primary types of pneumatic conveying: dilute phase and dense phase. Dilute phase conveying operates at high velocities with a low material-to-air ratio, suspending the material within the air stream. This method is suitable for lighter, less abrasive materials and can cover longer distances. Dense phase conveying, on the other hand, utilizes lower velocities and a higher material-to-air ratio, pushing the material as a slug or plug through the pipeline. This approach is preferred for heavier, abrasive, or fragile materials as it minimizes particle degradation and wear on the system.

The components of a pneumatic conveying system typically include a material source, an air mover (such as a blower or compressor), a pipeline, and a receiver. The receiver separates the conveyed material from the air, often using a filter or cyclone. Advantages of pneumatic conveying include its enclosed nature, which prevents dust emissions and protects the material from contamination, its flexibility in routing pipelines, and its ability to handle materials in both horizontal and vertical directions. However, potential drawbacks can include energy consumption, material attrition, and the need for careful system design to prevent blockages or wear.
