Plotmechanisme is a term used in narrative theory to describe the underlying causal engine that drives a story from beginning to end. It refers to the network of cause-and-effect relations, including events, decisions, obstacles, and their outcomes, that links the protagonist’s goals to the evolving plot. A well-defined plotmechanisme yields a coherent, engaging progression rather than a mere sequence of scenes.

Core elements of a plotmechanisme include the inciting incident, the series of turning points or reversals, and the escalating stakes that push characters toward action. The mechanism relies on a chain of plausible causality: characters’ choices influence events, which in turn constrain future options, creating momentum and tension. Pacing and information revelation are often integral, as the mechanism controls what the audience learns and when.

Plotmechanisme is related but distinct from plot devices and overall plot structure. Plot devices are specific tools—such as a ticking clock, a MacGuffin, or a red herring—that can activate or shape the mechanism. The plot structure outlines the broader organization (act breaks, rising action, climax), while the mechanism explains how the elements connect to produce growth, conflict, and resolution.

In practice, the term is used in literary analysis, screenwriting, and game design to analyze how a story’s events are causally linked and how effectively they sustain narrative interest. Critics may examine whether the mechanism feels organic or contrived and how it interacts with character development and thematic aims.
