Plies

Plies is the plural form of ply, a term used to describe a single layer, coat, or strand that forms part of a layered material. The concept unites several industries, where a material’s properties arise from the arrangement and interaction of its individual plies. In games, plies also refer to half-moves in a sequence of play.

In textiles, a ply is a single strand of yarn produced by twisting fibers together. When multiple plies are combined, such as two-ply or three-ply yarn, the resulting thread or yarn generally gains added strength, weight, or texture. The overall quality of the fabric depends on the number of plies, the twist, and the fibers used.

In wood products, a ply denotes a sheet or thin veneer that constitutes plywood or laminated wood. Plywood is built from several veneer plies bonded with adhesive, often with alternating grain directions to improve stability and strength. The total thickness is typically described by the number of plies, for example a 5-ply panel.

In composites, plies refer to individual layers of reinforcing material (like carbon fiber or fiberglass) embedded in a resin matrix. The plies are laid up in a specified orientation, such as 0°, 90°, or ±45°, and the stacking sequence determines stiffness, strength, and damage tolerance.

In chess and other turn-based games, a ply is a single half-move by one player. Search algorithms may report depth in plies; for example, a two-ply search evaluates one move by each side.
