Pleuraefusion

Pleuraefusion is a medical procedure that involves the anatomical fusion of the pleurae, the two-layered membrane surrounding the lungs, in concert with the corresponding layers of the adjacent chest wall or diaphragm. The procedure is typically performed to manage conditions such as pneumothorax, hemothorax, or other diseases that involve air or fluid accumulation in the pleural space.

During pleuraefusion, the surgeon may use various techniques to closely adhere the pleurae, including suturing, stapling, or clipping. In some cases, an obliteration procedure, where the pleural space is obliterated with tissue or clips, may be performed.

Pleuraefusion is often used in the treatment of chronic empyema, a condition characterized by the presence of pus in the pleural space, where conventional drainage and debridement have failed to resolve the infection. By removing the diseased tissue and adhering the pleurae, the procedure can help restore lung function and improve patient outcomes.

Other indications for pleuraefusion include treatment of recurrent pleural effusions, which are collections of fluid that accumulate in the pleural space, or management of severe, refractory pneumothorax. Overall, the goal of pleuraefusion is to restore lung function and alleviate symptoms associated with pleural disease.

Although pleuraefusion can be an effective treatment option for certain conditions, it is not without risks and complications, such as chronic pain, adhesions, and restricted lung movement.
