Plasmamembraanroutes refers to the various pathways and mechanisms by which substances move across the cell's outer boundary, the plasma membrane. These routes are essential for cells to obtain nutrients, eliminate waste products, and maintain internal homeostasis. The plasma membrane is selectively permeable, meaning it controls what enters and exits the cell, and this selective nature is governed by these routes.

There are broadly two categories of transport: passive and active. Passive transport does not require the cell to expend energy and relies on the concentration gradient of the substance. This includes simple diffusion, where small, lipid-soluble molecules like oxygen and carbon dioxide can pass directly through the lipid bilayer, and facilitated diffusion, which involves the help of specific membrane proteins, such as channel proteins or carrier proteins, to move larger or charged molecules like glucose and ions across the membrane. Osmosis, the movement of water across the membrane from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration, is a special case of passive transport.

Active transport, on the other hand, requires the cell to use energy, typically in the form of ATP, to move substances against their concentration gradient or to move large molecules. This is often achieved by protein pumps embedded in the membrane that bind to specific molecules and transport them across. Examples include the sodium-potassium pump, which maintains ion gradients crucial for nerve function, and the proton pump. Larger molecules or particles can also be transported via vesicular transport, a form of active transport that involves the formation of membrane-bound sacs called vesicles. Endocytosis is the process by which the cell takes in substances by engulfing them with the plasma membrane, forming a vesicle inside the cell. Exocytosis is the reverse process, where vesicles containing cellular products fuse with the plasma membrane to release their contents outside the cell.
