Planctomyces
Planctomyces is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the phylum Planctomycetota, previously known as Planctomycetes. These microorganisms are notable for their unique cellular architecture and ecological significance. Unlike most bacteria, Planctomyces lacks a peptidoglycan cell wall, instead possessing a distinct outer membrane supported by a proteinaceous layer called the S-layer. This structural difference contributes to their classification as one of the few bacteria with a true nucleus-like compartment, known as the nucleoid, which houses their DNA.
Planctomyces species are commonly found in aquatic environments, including freshwater, marine systems, and even polar regions.
The genus Planctomyces was first described in 1897 by Sergei Winogradsky, who isolated the type species, *Planctomyces
