Pitkähierrännäistä

Pitkähierrännäistä, scientifically known as Hydrobia ulvae, is a small species of freshwater snail belonging to the family Hydrobiidae. It is a common inhabitant of brackish and freshwater environments across Europe and parts of Asia. These snails are typically found in shallow waters, such as ponds, ditches, and estuaries, where they often cling to submerged vegetation or the substrate.

The shell of Pitkähierrännäistä is generally conical and dextral, meaning it spirals to the right. It can vary in color from light brown to dark gray and typically measures between 4 to 7 millimeters in height. The aperture, or opening of the shell, is oval-shaped and relatively small.

Pitkähierrännäistä plays a role in its ecosystem as a detritivore, feeding on algae, decaying organic matter, and bacteria found on surfaces. They are an important food source for various aquatic invertebrates and small fish. Reproduction occurs through sexual reproduction, with individuals being either male or female.
