Pitchedune

Pitchedune is a term used in landscape ecology and geomorphology to describe a specific type of coastal landform. It refers to a dune that is elongated and exhibits a pronounced asymmetry in its profile, with a steeper leeward face and a gentler windward face. This characteristic shape is a direct result of prevailing wind patterns and the deposition of sand.

The formation of a pitchedune is driven by unidirectional winds that transport sand grains up the windward slope. As the wind crests the dune, it loses energy, causing the sand to be deposited on the leeward side. This continuous process leads to the characteristic skewed profile. The term "pitched" refers to this asymmetrical, tilted appearance.

Pitchedunes are often found in environments with consistent wind direction and a sufficient supply of sand, such as barrier islands and coastal plains. They can occur individually or as part of larger dune systems. Their presence and orientation can provide valuable information about the historical wind regime of a coastal area. While the term is less common than some other dune types like barchans or transverse dunes, it accurately describes a distinct morphodynamic feature within dune landscapes.
