Pistokokeet

Pistokokeet, a Finnish term, translates to "stabbing tests" or "prick tests" in English and refers to a common diagnostic procedure used in allergy testing. This method involves introducing small amounts of suspected allergens into the skin's surface, typically on the forearm or back.

The skin is first cleaned, and then a tiny drop of an allergen extract is placed on the skin. A fine needle or lancet is used to gently prick or scratch through the drop and into the outermost layer of the skin. This allows the allergen to penetrate the dermis.

After approximately 15 to 20 minutes, the skin is examined for any reactions. A positive reaction is indicated by a localized swelling, known as a wheal, surrounded by redness, called a flare. The size of the wheal is measured to determine the severity of the allergic response to that specific allergen.

Pistokokeet are a quick and reliable way to identify a wide range of environmental allergies, such as those to pollen, dust mites, mold, and pet dander, as well as certain food allergies. The procedure is generally well-tolerated, with only mild discomfort during the pricking. Contraindications for the test include widespread skin conditions or the use of certain medications that might interfere with the results, such as antihistamines.
