Pistikupesa

Pistikupesa, the Estonian word for a power outlet or electrical socket, is a fixed component of an electrical installation that provides a connection point for a plug to receive electrical power. It is the female counterpart to the plug (pistik) and is designed to accept standard household devices and appliances.

In everyday use, pistikupesa is typically mounted in walls or, less commonly, in furniture or floor installations. In Estonia and most of Europe, the standard is 230 V AC at 50 Hz. The common socket system is part of the Schuko family (Type F) or a compatible Type E/F combination, which supports grounding either through side contacts (Schuko) or a protruding earth pin (Type E). Modern outlets often accept both types, improving compatibility with various plugs. Outlets are designed to handle typical household currents, commonly up to 10–16 A, and may include protective shutters to prevent contact by children.

Safety considerations include ensuring proper installation by a qualified electrician, avoiding damaged or overheated sockets, and keeping outlets dry and free from moisture. Many modern pistikupesa incorporate child-safety features and, in new installations, residual-current devices (RCDs) or other protective mechanisms are used to reduce shock risk. Extension cords should be used temporarily and not as a permanent substitute for a wall outlet.
