Pintakostumus

Pintakostumus is a Finnish term that translates roughly to "surface moisture" or "surface wetness." It refers to the presence of water or dampness on or within the outer layers of building materials, including concrete, brick, plaster, and timber. The phenomenon arises when water penetrates the material by capillary action, wind-driven rain, dew formation, or through pores and gaps in the structure.

In construction and building science, pintakostumus is monitored to assess the integrity and durability of façades and interior walls. Excessive surface moisture can lead to mold growth, corrosion of metal components, degradation of insulating materials, and a reduction in the aesthetic value of a building. Engineers often use moisture meters, infrared thermography, and evaporation tests to quantify the extent of pintakostumus. Mitigation strategies include installing waterproof membranes, improving ventilation, using moisture-resistant materials, and ensuring proper drainage systems are in place.

Pintakostumus also plays a role in indoor environmental quality. High relative humidity at the surface of walls can raise indoor dampness, potentially affecting occupants' health.
