Pildivõimendi, also known as an image intensifier, is a device that brightens faint images, making them visible to the human eye. It works by amplifying low levels of light, typically from sources such as starlight or residual radiation. The process usually involves converting incoming photons into electrons, which are then accelerated and multiplied before being converted back into visible light photons. This multiplication process significantly increases the brightness of the original image.

Pildivõimendi technology has found applications in various fields. Historically, it was crucial in night vision devices, allowing soldiers and observers to see in extremely low-light conditions. In astronomy, image intensifiers have been used to capture faint celestial objects, enabling detailed study of distant galaxies and nebulae.
