Piiriyksiköistä, also known as graphics processing units (GPUs), are specialized electronic circuits designed to rapidly manipulate and alter memory to accelerate the creation of images in a frame buffer intended for output to a display device. They are highly parallel in nature, meaning they can perform many calculations simultaneously, making them ideal for tasks that involve a large number of repetitive computations.

Initially developed for graphics rendering in video games and professional visualization, GPUs have evolved significantly. Their parallel processing capabilities have proven extremely effective for a wide range of computational tasks beyond graphics. This has led to their adoption in fields such as scientific computing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and cryptocurrency mining.

The architecture of a GPU differs from that of a central processing unit (CPU). While CPUs are designed for general-purpose computing and excel at handling sequential tasks and complex logic, GPUs are optimized for executing the same operation on many data points at once. This makes them far more efficient for tasks that can be broken down into numerous parallel operations.

Modern GPUs are powerful co-processors that work alongside the CPU, offloading computationally intensive tasks to free up the CPU for other operations. This symbiotic relationship significantly boosts overall system performance. The development of specialized programming models and APIs, such as CUDA and OpenCL, has further enabled developers to harness the power of GPUs for non-graphics-related applications.
