Pihustikud

Pihustikud, also known as whistles, are simple musical instruments that produce sound when air is blown across an opening or through a narrow passage. They are among the oldest and most widespread musical instruments, with examples found in various cultures worldwide. The basic principle behind their operation involves the creation of a standing wave in the air column, generating a tone when the air flow is disrupted.

In Estonia, pihustikud have a long history and are often associated with traditional folk music. One of the most well-known types is the *kannelpihustik*, a type of whistle used in conjunction with the kannel, a traditional Estonian string instrument. These whistles are typically made from wood, bone, or metal and are often decorated with intricate carvings or engravings. They are played by blowing across the edge of the opening, producing a clear, melodic tone.

Pihustikud come in various forms, including simple edge-blown whistles, pinched whistles, and more complex designs with multiple notes. Some traditional whistles, such as the *kannelpihustik*, are tuned to specific scales to complement the kannel’s playing. Modern versions may incorporate additional features, such as finger holes to alter pitch or embellishments for aesthetic purposes.

Beyond their musical use, pihustikud have also been employed in signaling, communication, and ceremonial contexts across different cultures. Their simplicity and portability make them accessible to a wide range of players, from amateur musicians to professional ensembles.
