Pienpuhdistamot

Pienpuhdistamot, or small wastewater treatment plants, are facilities designed to treat sewage and wastewater from individual households or small groups of buildings that are not connected to a municipal sewer system. These systems are commonly used in rural areas or in locations where extending the central sewer network is not economically feasible or technically possible.

The primary function of a pienpuhdistamo is to remove pollutants from wastewater before it is discharged into the environment, typically into a watercourse or groundwater. The treatment process generally involves several stages. Initially, solid waste is separated from the liquid through sedimentation or mechanical screening. Following this, biological treatment processes are employed, where microorganisms break down organic matter in the wastewater. This can occur in aerobic or anaerobic conditions. Finally, a tertiary treatment stage may be included to further polish the water, removing nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen, or to disinfect the effluent.

Different types of pienpuhdistamot exist, including septic systems with leach fields, aerobic treatment units, and constructed wetlands. The choice of system depends on factors such as soil conditions, the volume of wastewater, local environmental regulations, and the desired level of treatment. Regular maintenance and monitoring are crucial for the effective and long-term operation of these small-scale treatment facilities to ensure they meet environmental standards and protect public health.
