Pienoisa

Pienoisa is a coastal municipality and town in the northern Verdanian region. The name derives from the local word pienas meaning milk, reflecting a long-standing dairy heritage. The municipality comprises the town of Pienoisa and several rural villages.

It lies on a sheltered inlet along the Verdan Sea, with a mix of flat farmland, pine forests, and wetlands. The Pieno River runs north of the town, feeding marshlands that host migratory birds. The terrain is largely agricultural, with small hills in the hinterland.

Founded in the 11th century by agrarian settlers, Pienoisa grew as a dairy-processing center in the medieval period. The arrival of the railway in the 19th century linked it to larger markets, spurring population growth. In the late 20th century, it diversified into agri-tourism and crafts.

Today, dairy farming remains central, with several cooperatives producing cheeses and dairy products branded locally. Agriculture includes cereals, berries, and forest products. Tourism focuses on rural landscapes, nature reserves, and gastronomic experiences. The harbor serves small fishing boats and freight to nearby towns.

As of the latest estimates, Pienoisa has around 5,200 residents. The community is predominantly Verdanian-speaking, with a regional dialect. The annual Dairy Festival showcases local cheeses, music, and crafts, attracting visitors from neighboring regions.

Pienoisa is governed by a mayor and a 15-member municipal council. It is part of the Verdanian regional prefecture and connected by a network of roads and a small port. Education includes two primary schools and a secondary school; healthcare is provided by a local clinic and a regional hospital in a nearby town.
