The casing, often made of brass or steel, holds the other components together and seals the chamber upon firing. The primer, located at the base of the casing, contains a sensitive explosive compound that ignites when struck by the firing pin. This ignition then sets off the propellant, a chemical substance that burns rapidly, generating high-pressure gas. This gas propels the projectile, or bullet, out of the barrel.

Small arms ammunition is manufactured in vast quantities worldwide for military, law enforcement, and civilian use, including sport shooting and hunting.
