Picopbrengst refers to the extremely small yield of a product or result from a particular process or source. The term is a combination of "pico," a prefix denoting a factor of 10^-12, and "opbrengst," the Dutch word for yield. This indicates a measurement or quantity that is orders of magnitude smaller than typical units, suggesting that the output is almost negligible in practical terms.

This concept is often encountered in scientific research, particularly in fields dealing with trace amounts of substances or very low efficiency reactions. For example, in the extraction of rare elements from ore, the amount recovered might be measured in picograms, leading to a picopbrengst. Similarly, in certain chemical or biological processes, if the desired product is formed in vanishingly small quantities, it can be described as having a picopbrengst.

The significance of a picopbrengst lies in its implications for scalability and economic viability. A process yielding only picopbrengsten is unlikely to be practical for industrial production unless the value of the product is exceptionally high, or if the process is a stepping stone in a larger, more complex operation.
