Phytoweathering

Phytoweathering is a process in which plants contribute to the weathering of rocks and minerals. This biological weathering process is primarily driven by the activity of plant roots, which can physically and chemically alter the surrounding soil and rock. The roots of plants can penetrate cracks in rocks, exerting mechanical pressure that can cause the rock to fracture. This process is known as root wedging or root prying. Additionally, the roots can secrete organic acids, such as citric and malic acids, which can lower the pH of the soil, making it more acidic. This acidity can accelerate the chemical weathering of minerals, breaking them down into smaller particles.
