Physeteroidea is the superfamily of toothed whales that includes the modern sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus, and its extinct relatives. This group is characterized by a massive head, which houses the spermaceti organ, a large structure filled with a waxy substance thought to be involved in echolocation and buoyancy. Sperm whales are the largest toothed whales and are found in oceans worldwide. They are deep divers, capable of reaching depths of over 2,000 meters in search of their primary prey, giant and colossal squid.
